• RLogin from mbbs to sbbs

From Krydos@VERT to All on Friday, December 21, 2018 18:54:00
Years ago when I still had a computer running Windows XP I had a Major BBS
that would rlogin to Synchronet which was running as a doorserver as described at

    http://dmud.thebbs.org/wg/setup.htm

When I upgraded away from Windows XP I backed up all my old BBS stuff, and
shut it down. I got nostalgic again so now I've got a server running Ubuntu, and I installed Windows XP in a VM. I've got mbbs running great, and I've got sbbs running great in the same VM. I created an rlogin module in mbbs with the connection string

    l 192.168.1.11 %U %U ansi

When I access that module in mbbs I can see the rlogin connection pop up in sbbs, and I can see that it passes the username twice and ansi properly too. I can press f12 in sbbs and spy on the node to watch it log in and get to the door menu, but nothing ever comes up on the mbbs side. It just sits there for
a few minutes and then disconnects. Mbbs says

RLogin: ...Connection terminated because of [Unknown].

I guess sbbs can hear when mbbs talks but mbbs can't see anything that sbbs says in return? All the firewalls are disabled in Windows XP and Ubuntu. Port 513 isn't being used by anything other than sbbs. I've got everything set up exactly how I had it working years ago, except it's running in a VM instead of being the main OS.

I'm 99% sure the issue isn't with sbbs, but I was hoping you guys would have some ideas of something to try next. The mbbs people are all crazy and I don't want to talk to them. The only reason I'm messing with mbbs at all is because I'm obsessed with this space game called Galactic Empire which is
unfortunately only available on mbbs systems.

When I had it working before it was on sbbs 3.15b. Obviously I tried the newest version 3.16c first, and just in case it made a difference I tried 3.13a, 3.14a,
and 3.15b as well. The same thing happens on all versions.

I installed rlogind to another linux system, and created an mbbs module to connect to that computer, and it works. I was able to execute commands, and see the output through mbbs. The problem is just getting the output from sbbs to show up in mbbs.

Does it work when you connect manually with an RLogin terminal?

Port 513 isn't being used by anything other than sbbs.

If there was a port conflict, the server wouldn't be able to bind/listen on the port.

Yes, I can rlogin directly into sbbs on port 513 just not through mbbs.

Yes, I can rlogin directly into sbbs on port 513 just not through mbbs.

That tends to indicate a problem with mbbs then. A TCP dump might shed some light on what's going on, but probably not a solution.

Sorry if I seem like I'm implying there is something wrong with sbbs. I know the
problem isn't with sbbs, but probably the vm's networking if anything.

Anyways, I think I have it solved!

Instead of running sbbs on the windows xp vm alongside mbbs I compiled sbbs for linux, and mbbs is communicating with the linux version of sbbs. I think this is
going to work. I'm not sure why they won't talk to each other when they're on the
    same vm though.

    Haha, nevermind...

External DOS programs are not yet supported in
Synchronet BBS for Linux Version 3.17

So, either the dos doors will run, but I can't connect to them, or I can connect
to them, but they won't run. Any ETA on getting External DOS programs working in
    sbbs linux perhaps?
