I am slightly disappointed by the product, you need to clean the heads and even do power
cleanings a bit regularly. I know I am stuck with it for the next 2-3 years, but I would likely
try another brand instead if given the opportunity.

It is great for black and white text printing.

I guess it depends on how much you print. I think it would be a bit inconvenient to have to do that whenever you want to print something. We print enough that I'd rather have a printer at home.

I think a laser printer is nice because the toner doesn't dry out. You can let it sit for a while and be able to print again no problem.

I picked up a Canon MX922 (literally, by the side of the road, with a FREE sign on it, the only problem I can tell is that a highlighter fell into the paper exit path.

I got lucky with this one, 3rd party ink is $10/kit with all of the colors, a black tank for pictures and a pigment black tank for black and white printing. I've printed the hell out of it trying to see how many pages I'll get out of a tank and I'm pretty happy - my other printer would have been complaining by now, and the color and black and white tanks for that printer are $45!

I thought about those subscription models, but sending print information to a vendor seems like part of a solution looking for a problem - at least for me.

I vowed to avoid inkjets at nearly all cost a few years ago. I'd rather invest in a relatively cheap laser printer and leave the ink racket behind. You know what's great for black & white printing? heh

I think for me the biggest thing was knowing just how much we were getting ripped off, the built-in obsolescence of the ink & other parts, etc. Also, printer ink is one of the most expensive liquids anyone ever buys. Screw that! ;-)

I have an XP810 I bought because, sale, and I was tired of HP. I like the printer. My wife uses it for business and occasionally she'll have to clean it. I found out that if you go to do an ink change there's a spot on the right where ink pools like when it's priming the nozzles it just dumps ink into this spot. Occasionally I'll take several paper towels and blot the hell out of this spot until mosts of the ink dries up. I feel like it makes the printer less prone to cloting.

I like that I can print photos from my iphone from anywhere. works good with both android and iphone software. Daughter can print from her table whenever the mood strikes as well.

(IMO) Those are only good if you're OK with using generic print carts. we have a HP color laser at the office, and for $100 bucks we can replace the carts with generics vs. like $500 if we bought official HP carts. We mostly use it for eng drawings, so it doesn't have to be perfect, but occasionally I'll print out D&D books with little effort. Sucker is FAST too. Love it.

I agree with MRO. I haven't owned a printer in over 10 years. I do all my printing at staples or even better my local library for 10 cents a copy. No I don't do a lot of printing and for the amount of printing (we) do I can't justify the cost. If I had a printer I'd be thinking up stupid stuff to print out like birthday cards. I had a printer and printshop back in the day. I would go through paper and ink refills like crazy. lol

Yeah, I found a brand of cheaper toner cartridges for mine (a Brother laser printer) that are about 1/2 or 1/3 the cost of the official toner. They work just as well.

Yeah I'm also with MRO, as I'm pretty much paperless. Last print job I did, I took down to the local Officeworks and it cost me all of 8 cents for one black and white printed page. :) Their self serve kiosks are very straightforward to use.

Indeed... I think I've gotten my last InkJet ever, which isn't a bad printer in general, but HP's proving once again their anti-trust situation. Updating their firmware to add/change cryptography on their "authentic" ink, which costs like $112 for a full set of replacements for HALF the ink, claiming that it's awesome quality and.... The chip doesn't even connect to anything on the inside to determine /actual/ quantity. It's just a counter chip that reduces a number for each page printed. That's it.

Furthermore, They mix in Cyan with the black, just to use it, claiming it's "Enhancing the black....." What? Black is black....

I bought some KingJet ink for my printer and paid like $32 for all the colors at even more than the HP XL ink replacements provide. Sure, the printer nagged me about it not being "authentic", but it worked, because the guys at KingJet updated their chips to work with the newer firmware checks.

But, my next printer, definitely going to be Xerox Laser, or something comparable. I have to be picky when it comes to printers because I do use Linux, and not every printer is supported very well. Xerox at least mostly is postscript, which Linux definitely handles very well.

I would definitely agree with that - I don't have colour at home for this reason, too. I think it's under $40 for generic replacement carts for my Canon laser all-in-one I have here. And, without ever having to un-clog or otherwise maintain the inky printheads, I've been happy with it. With two school-age children around, and a teacher, it's a boon.

I know it may still be hit or miss in certain areas, but the situation seems to be massively improved since, say, the turn of the century.

I picked up a Canon MF217w from my local Best Buy a couple of years ago and can scan & print wirelessly to it, from the mix of Linux & Windows desktops and laptops around the house. Been very pleased with it as far as printers go.

Basically wanted to mention that you shouldn't *have* to limit yourself to one brand these days.

Exactly none. Null. It's like trying to mix in brown.. Or yellow. Or red... or blue... The results is.. You still get black every time. LOL

Yep. A BIIIIIG part of that was actually CUPS, which ironically Apple bought out and helped make into a bigger thing than it was originally. Apple is why we have better printer support in Linux, as a result. Go figure!

Basically wanted to mention that you shouldn't *have* to limit yourself to one brand these days.

Exactly. I like the idea of Xerox though because... Postscript.. Native Postscript. I once worked at a company that had one heck of a Xerox printer. I used it to print my resumes out for the next job I had lined up while I was there. It was a freaking awesome print, nice shiny and freaking clear quality printing, best I'd seen in a long time. It was like my resume was embued into a magazine, and just popped out and shined, literally.

The Xerox case is long ago now.. These days, trying to sue for making a GUI when "we did it first" would be like trying to sue a car company for adding a steering wheel for steering. It's pretty much common practice.
